Fatal South Ogden shooting death of Brandon Kay – Obituary
Brandon Kay, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, after being shot during a neighborhood incident in South Ogden on Jan. 8, authorities confirmed. His son was also injured in the attack, and the family dog was killed.
Kay’s family described him as a caring and hardworking man who held the same job for nearly 21 years and was deeply loved by friends, coworkers, and relatives. “Brandon was a friend to everyone he met and loved his family with great dedication,” the family stated. “His passing leaves a hole in all our hearts and in the community that can never be filled.”
The Weber County Attorney’s Office reported that Kay succumbed to gunshot wounds to the abdomen and head. The alleged shooter, 45-year-old James Joseph Rios, is now facing updated charges expected to include aggravated murder. Before Kay’s death, Rios had already been charged with multiple counts, including attempted aggravated murder and discharge of a firearm, as well as misdemeanor animal cruelty.
Investigators said Rios admitted to firing at his neighbors, citing “internal anger,” and that Kay and his son were struck while investigating the gunshots. Rios remains in Weber County Jail without bail pending a pretrial hearing.
