Jean Appleby Johnson, a 71-year-old woman, was tragically killed Wednesday afternoon after her vehicle was struck while parked on the shoulder of Harpswell Island Road.
The incident occurred around 2:49 p.m. near the intersection with Tower Hill Road, prompting a response from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department and local emergency services.
According to the investigation, Johnson had parked her black 2019 BMW X3 on the southbound shoulder of the road for unknown reasons and was standing outside the vehicle when a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 41-year-old Alton Wyman, crossed the centerline. Wyman’s truck entered the southbound lane and struck Johnson and her vehicle.
Despite life-saving efforts, Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene. Wyman, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries, was taken to Maine Medical Center for treatment.
The crash is under investigation by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, and no charges have been filed against Wyman as of now. Further details about the cause of the crash will be released as the investigation continues.
