Daniel Stave, a 72-year-old man from Leeds, North Dakota, has been identified as the victim who died following a serious two-vehicle collision Monday morning in Benson County, authorities confirmed.
The crash occurred at approximately 10:12 a.m. on westbound U.S. Highway 2, about six miles east of Leeds. According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, Stave was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado when his pickup truck collided with the rear of a semi-truck.
Investigators said the semi, a 2007 International pulling a loaded hopper-bottom trailer, had just merged onto westbound Highway 2 from Highway 281 and was in the process of accelerating when it was struck. The semi was driven by Kelby Houchin, a 34-year-old man from Fessenden.
Stave suffered critical injuries in the crash and was transported to CHI St. Alexius Health Devils Lake Hospital, where he later died. Authorities noted that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. The semi-truck driver was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured.
Officials reported that roadway conditions were wet, though the weather was clear and dry at the time of the crash. The North Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
