Philip Chiorino, a 31-year-old police officer with the Jacksonville Police Department, was killed in a shooting at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina earlier this week, according to sources familiar with the incident. His death has sent shockwaves through the local law enforcement and military communities.
Authorities said the shooting occurred Tuesday afternoon near Tarawa Terrace Elementary School on the Camp Lejeune military base. Sources identified the fallen officer as Chiorino, who lived just a few blocks from the school.
Jacksonville Police Chief Jarad Phelps confirmed that one of his officers was killed but initially declined to release the victim’s name, citing the ongoing investigation. “Any loss of a member of the department hurts,” Phelps said in a phone interview.
Officials with Camp Lejeune and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The Jacksonville Police Department stated it is unable to comment further because the investigation falls outside its jurisdiction.
According to a social media post from the department, Chiorino joined the Jacksonville Police Department in August 2024. Sources said he previously served as a Marine firearms instructor and completed multiple tours in Afghanistan.
The investigation into the shooting remains active as authorities work to determine the events that led to the deadly encounter.
