Fatal Columbus, Ohio single-vehicle crash death of Lee Gunderson – Obituary
Lee Gunderson, 46, of Columbus’ Southeast Side, was killed Friday, Jan. 15, after a high-speed crash on the city’s South Side. Gunderson had just collided with another vehicle, left the scene, and was traveling at nearly double the posted speed limit when his SUV struck a concrete barrier head-on.
According to Columbus police, Gunderson was driving a 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander westbound on Llewellyn Avenue near Parsons Avenue around 5:13 p.m. Officers arriving at the scene found him slumped over the center console and unresponsive. Emergency personnel attempted to revive him before he was transported to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 5:50 p.m.
Witnesses told police they saw Gunderson hit a vehicle near Watkins and Lockbourne roads and then flee. The witnesses followed him as he sped westbound on Llewellyn Avenue at roughly 70 mph, while the speed limit in that area is 35 mph.
The crash report indicates that Gunderson veered off the left side of the road and collided directly with a concrete barrier. Authorities also noted that he did not possess a valid driver’s license and that drugs or alcohol may have contributed to the incident.
