Fatal Tuolumne County, California car crash death of Gideon Guy Griffin – Obituary

Gideon Guy Griffin, a 37-year-old resident of Angels Camp, died following a vehicle crash in Tuolumne County, California, late Thursday night after an encounter with law enforcement. Authorities confirmed his identity after the incident.

According to the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were investigating a suspected theft shortly after 11 p.m. in the area of Mono Way near Hillsdale Drive. Officials reported seeing a man checking doors at a closed business and removing bags from outside before placing them into a vehicle. The vehicle was then seen slowly driving past other closed businesses nearby.

A records check later revealed that Griffin had an active Post Release Community Supervision warrant. When a deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop, Griffin did not comply and instead drove away, leading deputies on a pursuit.

Investigators said the pursuit involved dangerous driving behavior, including high speeds and repeatedly crossing into oncoming traffic lanes. While traveling along Highway 108 near South Sunshine Road, Griffin reportedly lost control of the vehicle, struck a traffic sign, left the roadway, and crashed into a ditch.

Deputies immediately rendered medical assistance until paramedics arrived. Griffin was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office stated that no further details will be released. The California Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash.
