Fatal K’gari, Australia beach death of Piper James – Obituary

Piper James, a 19-year-old visitor from Campbell River, British Columbia, was identified as the Canadian tourist found deceased on a beach in Australia early Monday morning.

Her death was confirmed after authorities responded to an emergency call on K’gari, formerly known as Fraser Island, shortly after sunrise. According to police, James had told friends she planned to go for an early morning swim at around 5 a.m. before she failed to return.

Queensland Police said two men later discovered her body on the shoreline and immediately contacted emergency services. Officers arrived at the scene around 6:35 a.m., where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

During a media briefing, Queensland Police Inspector Paul Algie stated that the body was surrounded by roughly 10 dingoes when it was found. Investigators have not yet determined whether James drowned or whether the animals played a role in her death.

James’ father, Todd James, shared a tribute on social media, describing his daughter as joyful, kind-hearted, and driven. He wrote that their family is devastated by the loss and will always cherish her laughter, strength, and determination to pursue her dreams.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, and a final cause of death has not yet been confirmed.
