Fatal Gainesville, Florida shooting death of Eduardo Pardo Rodriguez – Obituary
Law enforcement in Gainesville say a young man lost his life after a deadly shooting at a local lumber business earlier this month. The victim was identified as Eduardo Pardo Rodriguez, a 23-year-old employee at Imeca Lumber & Hardware.
According to police, the shooting occurred around 8 a.m. on January 14 when a man later identified as 31-year-old Justin Dewayne Long entered the store and opened fire. Investigators believe Rodriguez was targeted at random, noting there was little to no prior connection between the suspect and the business.
Gainesville Police Chief Nelson Moya stated that early findings suggest the suspect may have been experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of the attack. Officers responding to reports of gunfire attempted to stop Long as he fled the scene in a vehicle.
Police said Long exited the vehicle and began shooting at officers, prompting a gunfight. Two officers, Sgt. Rob Kennedy and Officer Jessie Herringshaw, were injured during the exchange and were transported to a hospital, where they were treated and later released.
Long was shot during the confrontation and later died at the hospital. Authorities continue to review the circumstances surrounding the incident as part of an ongoing investigation.
