Luis Sotero Herrera, 34, of Madison, was killed in a shooting early Sunday morning on the city’s south side.

The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Herrera’s identity and said an autopsy was completed Monday, with the cause and manner of death still under review. Madison police responded around 3:30 a.m. to the 400 block of Primrose Lane, where officers found Herrera suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have arrested two people in connection with the homicide: 67-year-old Jorge Eleodoro Baez and Melissa Britt Basilo Ruiz. Police said Ruiz is Baez’s daughter and previously had a relationship with the victim. Baez appeared in Dane County Court on Tuesday, where his bond was set at $2 million. The investigation remains ongoing as police and the medical examiner continue to review the circumstances surrounding Herrera’s death.
