Fatal Bakersfield, California pedestrian crash death of Salvador Lemus Meza – Obituary
A Bakersfield man was killed last week after being struck by a vehicle while walking along Oswell Street, according to authorities. A dog that was with him also died as a result of the crash.
The Kern County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 68-year-old Salvador Lemus Meza of Bakersfield. Officials said the collision occurred around 5:45 p.m. on January 20 on Oswell Street, just north of Pioneer Drive, where Meza was hit and died instantly.
The California Highway Patrol reported that officers were dispatched to the scene at approximately 5:46 p.m. following reports of a pedestrian-involved crash. Investigators determined that a 25-year-old man was driving a 2009 Nissan Rogue southbound on Oswell Street at about 45 miles per hour when Meza stepped into the roadway outside of a marked crosswalk and into the vehicle’s path.
Meza suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel. Authorities also confirmed that a dog involved in the incident did not survive, and animal control was requested to respond.
After the collision, the driver parked the vehicle near southbound Oswell Street and Potomac Avenue, then returned to the crash site and cooperated with investigators. No additional details about possible charges have been released.
