Fatal Bend car crash death of Melinda Ann Lyons – Obituary

An 85-year-old Bend resident lost her life Thursday afternoon after being struck by an SUV in a grocery store parking lot, according to local authorities.

The incident occurred at about 1:10 p.m. in the Safeway parking area on Century Drive in west Bend. Police said Melinda Ann Lyons was walking across the lot toward the store entrance when she was hit by a Ford EcoSport traveling at an estimated speed of 15 mph.

Emergency responders found Lyons suffering from critical injuries. She was taken to St. Charles Hospital for treatment, where she later passed away.

The driver, 77-year-old Evelyn Ranae Olsen, stayed at the scene and assisted investigators. Police issued her a citation for careless driving resulting in serious injury or death to a vulnerable person.

Officials said the investigation determined Lyons had been attempting to cross the parking lot at the time of the collision.
