Authorities have confirmed that the body discovered in the St. Joseph River has been identified as Michael Witt, a 59-year-old resident of Niles.

The discovery was made on Sunday, February 15, when two individuals walking along the Michigan Indiana River Valley Trail noticed a body in the water and immediately contacted emergency services. The remains were located along the east side of the river between the Broadway and Main Street bridges.

Rescue personnel from the Niles Fire Department responded and recovered the body from the river. Officials were able to determine Witt’s identity using documents found with him.

Investigators reported that there were no clear signs explaining how he died at the scene. To determine the exact cause and manner of death, an autopsy has been scheduled.

Police continue to review the circumstances surrounding the incident as they await further findings.
