Authorities say Linda Davis, a special education teacher, was killed Monday morning in a crash near her school as she was driving to work.

Investigators reported that the collision occurred less than a mile from Herman W. Hesse K-8 School, where Davis worked and was highly regarded by students and staff. School officials said she had committed her career to helping children grow and succeed, creating a supportive and caring classroom environment.

Police say the crash happened after 38-year-old Oscar Vasquez Lopez fled from federal immigration officers who had attempted to stop him. Officials with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Lopez initially pulled over but then sped away, made a U-turn, and ran a traffic signal before crashing into another vehicle. Davis was fatally injured in the collision.

Security footage showed a pickup truck speeding along the roadway, followed shortly by vehicles with flashing emergency lights. Authorities confirmed that Davis was on her way to report for duty when her life was cut short.

Lopez was taken into custody and remains in jail facing several charges, including vehicular homicide, reckless driving, and operating a vehicle without a valid license. The crash remains under investigation as officials continue reviewing the events leading up to the incident.
