A tragic multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 75 South near Sardis Church Road claimed the lives of Joann White, 61, and her 1-year-old grandson, Zion Thomas, according to Leon Jones.

Deputy Coroner Luann Stone confirmed the identities of the victims and said the child’s mother, 33, survived and was taken to Navicent Macon Medical Center for treatment. Several other passengers from the crash were also transported with injuries.

Authorities with the Georgia State Patrol reported that the incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. involving four vehicles traveling in the left lane. A Ford F-350 struck a Toyota Corolla from behind, forcing it into a Ford F-150, which then collided with the rear of a Chevrolet van, creating a chain-reaction crash.

Bystanders described the scene as harrowing. Witness Nana Owusu recalled stopping to check on the victims, while truck driver Charles Jones said he saw the vehicles spinning and immediately began praying for those involved.

The Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team responded to investigate the cause of the crash. Authorities continue to review the incident as additional details become available.
