Fatal Cuba boat shooting death of Michel Ortega Casanova – Obituary
Michel Ortega Casanova, a Florida resident originally from Cuba, was killed in a deadly shooting off the Cuban coast on Wednesday. The confrontation involved a Florida-registered vessel and Cuban Border Guard forces, resulting in four fatalities and six injuries.
Ortega Casanova, who lived in Lakeland near Tampa and immigrated to the United States in the 1980s, was confirmed dead by his family and his wife. Tampa-based organization Casa Cuba described him as a devoted patriot and member of the Cuban Republican Party.
His brother, Misael Ortega Casanova, expressed his grief, stating, “Today it was my brother’s turn, and those who perished alongside him.” Cuban authorities detained several passengers from the vessel, though Ortega Casanova remains the only identified victim so far.
Officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the involvement of the other passengers.
