Fatal Boulder County crash death of Thaddeus Fial – Obituary
Thaddeus Fial, 75, of Lafayette, has been identified as the cyclist who lost his life following a collision with a dump truck in Boulder County on Friday.
The Boulder County Coroner’s Office confirmed Fial’s identity after the late-morning crash at the intersection of Colorado 119 and Niwot Road. Emergency crews from Mountain View Fire Rescue were dispatched to the scene around 11 a.m. after reports of a collision involving a bicycle and a dump truck. First responders attempted lifesaving measures, but Fial’s injuries were critical, and he was pronounced dead at the location.
According to the Colorado State Patrol, the dump truck had been stopped at a red light in the eastbound lane at the intersection with southbound Colorado 119. Fial was riding east along Niwot Road toward the same intersection. When the signal changed to green, the truck began making a right turn as Fial continued forward. The two collided, throwing Fial from his bicycle. Authorities said the truck then ran over him before coming to a stop on the shoulder of southbound Colorado 119, also known locally as the Diagonal Highway.
The right-turn lane from eastbound Niwot Road onto southbound Colorado 119 was temporarily shut down as investigators worked at the scene.
Officials stated that the dump truck driver stayed at the location and is cooperating with authorities. The Colorado State Patrol’s Vehicular Crimes unit is leading the investigation, which remains ongoing.
