A 49-year-old man from Salinas lost his life after being hit by an Amtrak train Monday night near the city’s train station. Authorities said Robert Rufus Thomas Jr., who was reportedly homeless, was struck by the train and initially transported to a hospital in critical condition.
Despite medical efforts, officials from the Monterey County Coroner’s Office confirmed the following morning that Thomas succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the incident.
The crash also caused significant delays, with Amtrak’s Coast Starlight service being held up for several hours as a result of the accident.
