A 35-year-old man from Rexburg lost his life after a crash involving a dead elk on Idaho Highway 33. Authorities identified the victim as Bret Watson Irby.
According to officials, the incident occurred early Tuesday morning near mile marker 119, between Driggs and Rexburg. Emergency crews responded to reports of a pickup truck accident shortly after 7 a.m.
Investigators say Irby was driving east in a 2003 Ford F-150 when his vehicle struck a deceased elk lying in the roadway. The impact caused the truck to overturn and come to rest upside down in a nearby field.
First responders found that Irby had been ejected from the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries at the scene. Officials also noted that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The Idaho State Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident. Local emergency agencies assisted at the scene and extended condolences to Irby’s family and loved ones.
