A tragic incident in Newark claimed the life of 34-year-old Rosalia Antonia Mariscal after she was struck by a vehicle while walking with a small dog on Monday evening. The collision occurred near the intersection of Cedar Boulevard and Joaquin Murieta Avenue.
According to the Newark Police Department, the crash happened around 8 p.m. as a driver was exiting a nearby shopping center. The vehicle hit both Mariscal and the dog during this maneuver.
Emergency responders arrived quickly and attempted to provide medical assistance to both victims, who were found unconscious at the scene. Despite their efforts, Mariscal and the dog succumbed to their injuries.
Authorities confirmed that the driver remained at the scene and cooperated fully with investigators. At this stage, it remains unclear whether alcohol or drugs played any role in the incident.
The Alameda County Coroner’s Office later confirmed Mariscal’s identity, noting that she was a resident of Hayward. Officials also stated that this marks the first pedestrian fatality resulting from a traffic collision in Newark this year.
Earlier in the year, the city recorded another deadly traffic-related incident involving a motorcyclist who lost his life after crashing into a median and traffic signal.
