Authorities have confirmed that 95-year-old Dorene Ellis of Monterey died following a devastating three-alarm fire at the Casanova Plaza apartment complex on March 9, 2026. The blaze forced nearly 90 residents to evacuate and prompted an extensive emergency response.
The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner reported that Ellis’s death was caused by complications from burns, along with smoke and soot inhalation. In addition to her death, eight other residents were hospitalized, including two who required specialized care at a burn center.
The early morning fire displaced a significant portion of the community, leaving many residents unable to recover personal belongings. Relief efforts are underway, with the American Red Cross providing support and local nonprofits collecting donations for the displaced, many of whom are elderly.
Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the fire to determine its full cause and progression.
