Fatal Honolulu, Hawaii bus crash death of James E. Oda – Obituary
Officials in Honolulu have confirmed the death of 59-year-old city bus driver James E. Oda following a crash in the Kalihi area. The incident occurred Tuesday morning shortly after 7 a.m. near the intersection of Pua Lane and North Vineyard Boulevard.
Police reported that Oda was driving westbound when he lost control of the bus and collided with a tree. The vehicle was not in service at the time, and there were no passengers onboard.
Emergency crews from the Honolulu Fire Department responded and found Oda trapped inside the driver’s seat. Firefighters used specialized hydraulic tools to free him from the wreckage.
During the rescue effort, responders encountered a beehive in the tree, resulting in three firefighters being stung multiple times.
Oda was transported in critical condition but later died from his injuries. Authorities have not yet determined the official cause and manner of death.
The crash remains under investigation as officials work to determine what led to the incident.
