Authorities in Roswell reported that a man was fatally shot by police following a traffic stop that escalated on Wednesday night. According to New Mexico State Police, the incident occurred at approximately 8:42 p.m. near the intersection of West Berrendo Road and Main Street.
An officer initially attempted to stop a silver Cadillac in the area, but the driver fled, eventually pulling into a nearby trailer park. Once the vehicle came to a stop, officers initiated what was described as a high-risk approach, with backup present.
Police said the driver, later identified as 64-year-old William James Roberts, was instructed to exit the vehicle with his hands raised. During the encounter, Roberts allegedly retrieved a firearm and pointed it toward the officers. In response, officers opened fire.
Roberts was transported to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Officials confirmed that no other individuals were harmed during the incident. A firearm was recovered at the scene.
The officers involved have been placed on standard administrative leave while the investigation continues. Their identities have not yet been disclosed as authorities work to review the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
