Fatal Tucson midtown crash death of Colette Mukankaka and Donatille Nyiramugwera – Obituary

Authorities have confirmed the identities of two women who lost their lives in a pedestrian collision in Tucson on Thursday evening. The victims, Colette Mukankaka, 71, and Donatille Nyiramugwera, 60, were struck while crossing a roadway in midtown.

Police officers from the Tucson Police Department’s Midtown Operations Division were dispatched to the junction of 29th Street and Rosemont Avenue around 6:20 p.m. on March 19 following reports of a crash involving pedestrians. Upon arrival, both women were found at the scene and were declared dead.

Investigators determined that Mukankaka and Nyiramugwera had been walking across 29th Street from the north side to the south when they were hit by a westbound 2008 Acura MDX traveling in the curb lane. At the time of the incident, the pair were using a clearly marked crosswalk equipped with an active HAWK beacon designed to signal drivers.

The driver, identified as a 65-year-old man, stayed at the location after the collision. Police reported that he showed no signs of impairment. However, he has been charged with causing death due to a violation under Arizona traffic laws.

According to investigators, the main factor contributing to the crash was the driver’s failure to yield to pedestrians within a marked crosswalk. Authorities say inquiries into the incident are still underway.
