A tragic domestic-related incident in Salisbury resulted in the death of 40-year-old Sebastian Rankin Jr, known to loved ones as “Bump,” on Thursday afternoon.

Police responded to a call reporting a break-in at a residence along Broad Street on March 19. When officers arrived, they discovered Rankin inside the home, where he had been fatally shot.

Authorities confirmed that two other individuals, a man and a woman, were also injured during the incident. The person believed to be responsible for the shooting was taken to a hospital, and officials indicated that charges could be filed as the investigation progresses.

Family members shared that Rankin had gone to the house to check on the situation when he was killed. His stepfather expressed grief and called for justice, stating that Rankin had not caused trouble and was simply trying to address what was happening at his home.

Rankin’s mother described him as a caring individual who was well-known and loved by many. She also noted that he was a father and had achieved recognition as a state champion in track.

Law enforcement officials stated that the case remains under active investigation, with assistance from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. They added that no additional suspects are currently being sought.
