According to the Colorado State Patrol, Longfellow was crossing Highway 74 between 7:30 and 7:45 p.m. when he was struck. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but he was pronounced dead at the location.

Longfellow was well-known in his community, often seen walking to local businesses such as Walmart, McDonald’s, and Starbucks. Neighbors frequently offered him food, water, or rides when possible. After the crash, community members searched for him at his usual stops before finding his body on a median near Kerr Gulch Road.

Investigators reported that the driver did not stop after the crash, prompting a search for the suspect vehicle. Authorities have since identified a person and vehicle of interest and are gathering evidence to support potential court proceedings.
