Octavia Redmond dies in fatal West Pullman shooting
Fatal West Pullman shooting death of Octavia Redmond – Obituary
A USPS letter carrier, Octavia Redmond, was tragically killed in a shooting on Friday morning in Chicago’s West Pullman neighborhood.
Around 11:38 a.m., Redmond, 48, was delivering mail in front of a house on the 12100 block of South Harvard when an unknown assailant approached and shot her multiple times before fleeing in a vehicle on 121st Street, according to police.
The Cook County Medical Examiner identified the victim as Octavia Redmond of Chicago. She sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to Christ Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
“I had the opportunity to meet with her and talk to her, she’s a great co-worker,” said Elise Foster, the President of Branch 11 of the National Letter Carriers Association (NALC), in a social media video. “Sister Redmond will not be going home to her family, and I have a problem with that.”
Brian L. Renfroe, the National President of the NALC, stated that Redmond had been a dedicated letter carrier for five years. In a statement, he expressed sorrow over the loss of Redmond, a member of Branch 11. “The 280,000 members of NALC mourn the loss of Sister Redmond. She was a public servant doing her job when her life and future were stolen from her. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with her family, friends, and all her loved ones.”
Earlier this year, lawmakers introduced the Protect Our Letter Carriers Act in Congress, aimed at deterring such crimes and holding perpetrators accountable. In honor of Redmond, the NALC urged Congress to quickly pass this legislation.
This incident comes shortly after a letter carrier was robbed in Bronzeville, an event captured on camera. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is offering up to $150,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction in that case.
“We are under attack here in Chicago,” Foster said. “Something needs to happen because we need some help; this cannot happen ever again.”
A reward of up to $250,000 has been announced by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for Redmond’s death. Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to contact the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at 1-877-876-2455. All tips will remain confidential.
Area detectives and USPIS continue their investigation.
