Authorities have reported the death of Wanda Palmer, 53, from Ravenswood, West Virginia, who had recently emerged from a coma and identified her late brother as her assailant.
Jackson County Sheriff Ross Mellinger confirmed Palmer’s passing on July 12 at WVU Thomas Memorial Hospital in South Charleston, as noted in her obituary from Casto Funeral Home of Ravenswood.
In June 2020, Palmer was discovered unconscious and suffering severe head injuries at her home. She remained in a coma at a nursing facility for two years.
Initially, her brother, Daniel Palmer, was suspected, but there wasn’t sufficient evidence to proceed with charges at that time, as per court documents.
By June 2022, Palmer began to regain consciousness and started to speak in single words. A protective services worker notified a deputy of her condition. Shortly after, Palmer told the deputy that her brother, Daniel, was responsible for her injuries, as detailed in a criminal complaint obtained by WCHS-TV.
It remains unclear whether Palmer fell back into a coma after naming her brother or what her health status was in the subsequent two years. The Associated Press has sought further details from the sheriff’s office.
Sheriff Mellinger described the case as “extremely unusual.” Daniel Palmer, 55, from Cottageville, faced charges of attempted murder and malicious wounding. He was in frail health at the time of his arrest and died in the hospital less than a week later.
