Sonya Massey, 36, was tragically killed in a shooting on Saturday night in Springfield, Illinois. The incident involved two deputies from the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office, according to law enforcement reports.
At around 12:50 a.m., deputies were called to a residence in Springfield to investigate a suspected prowler. By approximately 1:21 a.m., the deputies reported that shots had been fired, and Massey was struck by gunfire. Emergency medical services arrived shortly after, and Massey was taken to St. John’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 1:47 a.m. Fortunately, no deputies were harmed during the event.
Jim Allmon, the Sangamon County Coroner, confirmed that Massey’s death resulted from a gunshot wound following an autopsy. The incident is under ongoing investigation by the Illinois State Police and the Sangamon County Coroner’s office.
The Illinois State Police, now leading the investigation, have stated they will not release body camera footage at this time to maintain the integrity of the legal process and ensure a fair trial if charges are pursued. The sheriff’s office has requested the ISP to conduct an independent inquiry into the shooting.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, representing Massey’s family, claims that Massey was shot in her own home after she called 911 about an intruder. This claim has not been independently verified by ABC News. Crump has called for the immediate release of all body camera footage, stating, “It is extremely hard to imagine how a woman who calls the police out of fear of an intruder ends up shot in the head by the police at her own home.”
On Friday, supporters of Massey’s family held a protest in Springfield, demanding justice and accountability. John Milhiser, the Sangamon County State Attorney, confirmed that his office is collaborating with state police on the investigation but has not provided additional details at this time.
The identities of the deputies involved in the incident have not been disclosed. The state police have promised to share further information, including video footage, with Massey’s family before making it public.
