Fatal Youngstown-Warren Plane Crash Death of Jawdat Khawam – Obituary

The Ohio State Highway Patrol has released the identities of the victims in a tragic plane crash near the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport on Friday.

The pilot, Jawdat Khawam, 54, along with passengers Martine Arseneault, 45, and Daphne Khawam, 8, all from Laval, Quebec, perished in the crash, according to a statement from the Highway Patrol.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has commenced an investigation into the incident. Anthony Trevena, Executive Director of the Western Reserve Port Authority, confirmed the crash occurred during an unscheduled emergency landing of an aircraft not affiliated with the Youngstown Air Reserve’s 910th wing.

According to the Highway Patrol, the crash happened shortly after 7 p.m. at the end of runway 14, resulting in the deaths of the pilot and both passengers. Both the NTSB and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) responded to the scene.

The NTSB informed First News that the aircraft involved was a Beechcraft BE-60. The pilot had reported an engine failure. The FAA added that the plane had departed from Plattsburgh International Airport in New York, though its final destination remains unknown.

NTSB representatives stated that two investigators would arrive on Saturday to document the wreckage, which will then be moved to a secure facility for detailed analysis.

The NTSB’s investigation will focus on three key areas: the pilot, the aircraft, and the operating environment. They anticipate releasing a preliminary report within 30 days, with a comprehensive final report expected in 12 to 24 months, which will determine the probable cause and any contributing factors.

The investigation will collect data on:

Flight track information
Air traffic control communications
Aircraft maintenance logs
Weather conditions at the time of the crash
Pilot’s credentials and recent flight experience
The pilot’s activities in the 72 hours prior to the accident
Witness testimonies
Electronic devices with relevant data
Any available surveillance footage, including doorbell cameras
The NTSB urges anyone with information or footage related to the crash to contact them at [email protected].

Following the crash, First News’ weather camera captured a plume of smoke near the runway. A nearby driver, Rebecca Baker, took photographs of the aftermath, which are displayed below.

Janice Thomas, a local resident, recounted hearing the plane before it crashed. “It was a strange, whining sound that got louder and louder. I didn’t realize it was a plane crash until the 11 p.m. news. It’s shocking and very sad. My prayers go out to the families involved,” she said.
