Fatal Sydney shooting death of Paul Thijssen – Obituary

Surveillance footage has surfaced showing Paul Thijssen, the suspect in the murder of 21-year-old Sydney teacher Lilie James, shortly after the fatal incident at their workplace.

The footage, captured by 9 News, shows Thijssen, 23, arriving at Diamond Bay Reserve at 8:47 p.m. on Wednesday, roughly an hour after the alleged crime took place at St Andrews Cathedral School in Sydney’s central business district.

In the video, Thijssen is observed walking along a path, discarding what is believed to be the murder weapon into a nearby bin, and then leaving the scene in his silver Lexus.

He spent approximately two hours in his vehicle before contacting the police to report the location of James’ body.

On Saturday morning, authorities confirmed that the body recovered from the water at Diamond Bay Reserve in Vaucluse was indeed Thijssen’s.

Initially sought for questioning in connection with James’ death, Thijssen’s identity was confirmed following the retrieval of his body from the reserve.

Paul Thijssen, a former student of St Andrews, had been under investigation after his brief romantic involvement with James, which lasted about five weeks, ended prior to her death. The circumstances surrounding their relationship are still under review.

NSW Police have announced that investigations are ongoing, and a report will be submitted to the Coroner. On Friday, a substantial operation was launched to recover Thijssen’s body from the coast near Diamond Bay Reserve, involving multiple police units, including the Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit, Marine Area Command, and the Westpac Rescue helicopter.

In a statement released on Friday, James’ family expressed their profound grief, describing her as “vibrant, outgoing, and very much loved by her family and friends.” They expressed appreciation for the community’s support and requested privacy while the police investigation continues. Media inquiries should be directed to the NSW Police Media Unit.
