Fatal Clifton truck accident death of Luis Santiago – Obituary
Authorities have identified the truck driver who perished in a fiery collision involving a bus on Route 3 in Clifton on Monday morning.
Luis Santiago, 55, from Linden, was driving a tractor-trailer that clipped an NJ Transit bus before crashing into a barrier on Route 3 east at around 11 a.m., according to the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office. The collision caused Santiago’s truck to ignite, resulting in a large explosion.
Santiago’s remains were found after the Clifton Fire Department managed to control the blaze. Fortunately, none of the 29 passengers on the bus sustained injuries, as stated by the prosecutor’s office.
The crash led to a complete closure of Route 3, with the investigation and cleanup operations extending into Monday night. By Tuesday morning, all lanes and ramps had been reopened.
Clifton Fire Chief Daniel Collins reported that the intense heat from the fire caused exterior damage to three nearby homes. Residents were able to return to their homes by Monday afternoon after officials declared the buildings safe.
