Fatal Mitchell car crash death of Dereon Betancur – Obituary
Dereon Betancur, a 19-year-old Mitchell High School graduate from the class of 2015, tragically lost his life in a severe car accident on the west side of Mitchell on Saturday.
Family and friends have shared the news on social media, and an obituary has been confirmed by the Star-Herald.
Betancur was a passenger in a vehicle that collided with the Ice Box Liquor Store on Mitchell’s west end.
According to the Nebraska State Patrol, Joshua Bolzer, 23, of Mitchell, was driving a white 2004 Chevrolet Silverado crew cab pickup when he lost control on a curve. The truck hit a utility pole and then a tractor.
Witnesses reported that the pickup truck was being driven recklessly before it struck a light pole and the building, as stated by Mitchell Police Chief Mike Cotant.
The impact was so intense that the truck’s cab and bed were separated, with the engine and transmission scattered among the wreckage.
The driver, Bolzer, was arrested at the scene, although the Nebraska State Patrol’s press release did not specify any charges against him.
Passengers Thomas Rile, 19, and Braydon Wiedeman, 19, both from Mitchell, were transported to Regional West Medical Center for treatment of their injuries.
The response to the crash involved the Nebraska State Patrol, Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office, Morrill and Mitchell Police Departments, and the Scotts Bluff County Attorney’s Office. The accident occurred at approximately 4 a.m.
