Fatal Mabou car crash death of Isaac James Goswell and Duncan Chisholm – Obituary
Communities across western Cape Breton are uniting following a tragic two-vehicle collision that resulted in the deaths of two Inverness County high school students and a 71-year-old visitor from Utah.
On Saturday morning, police were dispatched to the scene of the crash in Mabou, N.S., where they found that a car and a pickup truck had collided on Highway 19.
The car’s driver and passenger were pronounced dead at the scene, while the 71-year-old man, a passenger in the truck, succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital.
3 dead, 3 injured in Cape Breton crash
The RCMP have yet to officially release the names of the teenage victims, but community sources have identified them as 17-year-old Isaac James Goswell and Duncan Chisholm, whose exact age remains undisclosed.
Both were students at Dalbrae Academy, a high school in Mabou that opened its doors later that day to provide support and comfort to those affected by the accident.
‘It’s really ripped through the county’
In the wake of the tragedy, organizers of the Whycocomagh Summer Festival decided to cancel Saturday’s events to honor the victims and their families.
“It’s really ripped through the county,” Lynn Chisholm, a representative for Mabou and Port Hood on the Inverness County council, shared with CBC’s Information Morning Cape Breton.
Chisholm, who is not related to the deceased students, had visited Goswell’s grandparents in Port Hood shortly before speaking to CBC News.
“Everyone is feeling numb and shocked,” she said. “We just need to be there for them not just in the immediate aftermath but for the long haul. This is such a tragic time, and all we can do is keep praying for these families.”
A GoFundMe campaign created by Goswell’s cousin, Chloe Harnish, to support his family has surpassed its original $10,000 goal, raising nearly double that amount by Wednesday afternoon.
“Isaac was a bright light in our lives, full of dreams and a future that was meant to shine,” Harnish wrote on the fundraising page. “He touched everyone with his kind nature and love for the outdoors. We want to honor his memory with the dignity and love he deserves.”
Utah visitors still recovering from injuries
The driver of the pickup truck and his three passengers, all from Utah, were en route to Inverness, N.S., for a golf trip at Cabot Links.
Three occupants of the truck were hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Scott Henry, whose brother Dan is recovering in the hospital, shared on social media that the Utah visitors had experienced flight delays the previous night and arrived in Cape Breton in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Dan Henry and his wife Kelly, who run a podcast called The Marriage Comeback, arrived in Nova Scotia with Scott Henry this week. Kelly is now by Dan’s side in Sydney.
