Fatal Long Beach shooting death of Jeffrey Poorman – Obituary
On Tuesday, July 23, a 44-year-old man named Jeffrey Poorman was fatally shot in the garage of his home in north Long Beach. Authorities reported that Poorman sustained gunshot wounds to his upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police responded to the scene on Lime Avenue, near the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library, around 1:30 p.m. They later arrested Mathew De Diego, a 19-year-old resident of Long Beach, on suspicion of Poorman’s murder. De Diego was apprehended by detectives on Gardenia Avenue.
The relationship between Poorman and De Diego was confirmed to be known to each other. Authorities are still investigating the incident to understand the motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Long Beach Police Department Chief Wally Hebeish commended the rapid response of the department in a statement, highlighting their commitment to apprehending individuals who commit violent crimes. Detectives are also seeking witnesses who may have been in the vicinity at the time of the shooting.
De Diego remains in custody with a bail set at $3 million.
