On Wednesday morning, a shooting outside a Planet Fitness gym in Portland resulted in one person being hospitalized and the subsequent discovery of the suspect in another state.
The incident unfolded around 9:40 a.m. on July 24, in front of the gym located on the 100 block of West Knight Street.
The shooting also involved a secondary crime scene at a nearby Sonic, as observed by a News 2 crew. Interim Portland Police Chief Jason Arnold revealed that the victim was shot in the face but survived due to a timely evasive movement.
The victim managed to escape and was taken to TriStar Skyline Medical Center for treatment, though details on his injuries remain unclear.
According to Arnold, the suspect, Coltin James Lynch, was initially asked to leave the Planet Fitness earlier in the day.
Lynch returned to the gym, exited, and then confronted the victim outside, pressing a gun to the back of the victim’s head. Lynch allegedly fired at the victim with a pistol before threatening another person, who fled without being harmed.
Lynch then fled the scene. Law enforcement efforts to locate him led to a tip from the Allen County Sheriff’s Office in Kentucky, which reported finding Lynch deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Deputies responded to a call at the Adolphus community near Walkers Chapel Road and Pleasant Ridge Church Road around 10:45 a.m. Kentucky State Police are handling this part of the investigation.
The identity of the deceased was confirmed by KSP as possibly linked to the Portland shooting.
In response to the incident, the Portland Police Department expressed gratitude for the extensive support from local and state agencies, including the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office, the Sumner County Emergency Management Agency, and others.
Further details on the case have yet to be disclosed.
