Fatal Angelina County Jail death of Michael Stolich – Obituary

A Lufkin resident, Michael Stolich, passed away on Tuesday while in custody at the Angelina County Jail, just two days following his arrest.

Sheriff Tom Selman reported that deputies were dispatched to a church in Pollock around 10 p.m. on Sunday after receiving calls about a man exhibiting erratic behavior and suspected drug use.

Upon arrival, deputies located Michael Stolich, 46, of Lufkin, near a truck in the church parking lot. Determining that Stolich was intoxicated, they arrested him.

Items scattered around the truck included a package containing what appeared to be 12 grams of methamphetamine.

At the Angelina County Jail, Stolich was placed in a detox cell in the booking area to allow the drugs to wear off. Despite this, Stolich’s erratic behavior persisted.

Sheriff Selman mentioned that deputies monitored Stolich every 10 minutes, but by Tuesday morning, his condition had not improved enough for him to communicate coherently with jail staff.

At approximately 11:20 a.m., Stolich was found on the floor, unresponsive. Jail officers immediately initiated life-saving measures until Lufkin Fire EMS arrived and took over.

Stolich was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead from what is believed to be cardiac arrest.
