SAVANNAH, Ga. — A tragic shooting at Savannah State University late Thursday night claimed the life of a student, leading to an emergency lockdown at the Georgia campus.
According to a statement released on the university’s website, the victim has been identified as Christopher Starks, a 22-year-old junior from the Atlanta region.
The statement reports that Starks succumbed to gunshot wounds at a local hospital, injuries he sustained during a confrontation at the student union. Details about the altercation remain scarce.
The lockdown was lifted around midnight, as confirmed by university spokeswoman Loretta Heyward in a report to The Associated Press.
As of now, there have been no arrests, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is leading the probe, with assistance from campus police. Savannah State University officials indicated that the shooting appears to be a singular event and the assailant has not yet been identified.
In response to the tragedy, the university has postponed classes until 10 a.m. on Friday and is providing grief counseling services on campus.
Additionally, a prayer vigil is scheduled for Friday afternoon at the Felix-Alexis Circle Unity Plot, organized through the university’s social media channels.
Established in 1890, Savannah State University is recognized as Georgia’s oldest public historically Black college.
