Fatal Colorado car crash death of Charlie Clark – Obituary

In a heart-wrenching event near the Wyoming-Colorado border, three young members of the University of Wyoming’s swimming and diving team were tragically killed in a car accident.

The victims have been named as sophomore Charlie Clark, 19, from Las Vegas; junior Luke Slabber, 21, from Cape Town, South Africa; and freshman Carson Muir, 18, from Birmingham, Alabama.

The crash occurred at the junction of U.S. Highway 287 and Red Mountain Road, between Livermore and Virginia Dale, Colorado.

Initial reports suggest that the vehicle swerved off the road and rolled over several times.

The Colorado State Patrol is investigating the incident, with no potential causes yet ruled out, including speed, impairment, or distractions that could have played a role in the tragic event.

In addition to the fatalities, two other team members sustained injuries that are not life-threatening and have since been released from the hospital. One of these individuals was driving the vehicle when the accident took place just before 2:45 p.m.

The car involved, a Toyota RAV4, was carrying five people. It left the southbound lane and rolled several times, leading to the ejection of two passengers. The Colorado State Patrol continues to probe the specifics of the crash.

It should be noted that while the victims were all part of the University of Wyoming’s swimming team, they were not engaged in any official university activities at the time of the accident.

In response to this tragic loss, University of Wyoming President Ed Seidel expressed profound sorrow, noting that words cannot fully capture the depth of the grief felt by the university, the state, and the wider student-athlete community. Athletic Director Tom Burman also extended his condolences, acknowledging the difficulty of losing members of the university family and emphasizing the availability of counseling services for students and staff.

As the community mourns, Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon and his wife have expressed their sympathies, urging everyone to keep the victims’ families and loved ones in their thoughts during this challenging time.

This tragic event highlights the unpredictable nature of life and serves as a poignant reminder of its fragility. The University of Wyoming, along with the state and the broader community, will undoubtedly come together to support each other and honor the memory of those lost.
