Fatal Salina shooting death of Jesse D. Wray – Obituary
According to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, a 25-year-old man named Jesse D. Wray was killed in an officer-involved shooting in Salina on Wednesday evening around 7:20 p.m.
The incident occurred in the 500 block of N. 12th Street, near Lincoln Avenue. The Salina Police Department reported that officers encountered several individuals, some of whom had outstanding warrants, and took them into custody.
Earlier, a homeowner had notified authorities about a 44-year-old man in a detached garage east of the residence. Officers entered the garage and arrested the man for an outstanding warrant, discovering that Wray was also inside.
As per the KBI, a K-9 officer instructed Wray to exit the garage, but he refused, barricaded himself inside, and threatened to shoot if the officers attempted to enter.
The officers retreated, established a perimeter, and called in the Salina SWAT Team for assistance, with Kansas Highway Patrol troopers also arriving to help.
While waiting for the SWAT Team, officers noticed a fire and smoke coming from the garage. The garage door then opened, and a woman emerged, followed by Wray.
A confrontation ensued with exchanged gunfire. Salina officers and KHP troopers fired at Wray, resulting in his death at the scene at 8:45 p.m. The woman was transported to Salina Regional Health Center and later discharged.
No officers were injured during the incident. The KBI is investigating the shooting and will submit its findings to the Saline County Attorney.
