Last Thursday, July 18, a combined effort by police and a U.S. Marshal’s task force surrounded a residence near Rural Road and Southern Avenue to apprehend 35-year-old Matthew Walsh, who was wanted for several felony charges in Chandler.
The U.S. Marshals Service was brought in due to Walsh’s known history of violence and firearm use.
After instructing everyone inside the home to come out, four individuals emerged, but Walsh and Alva stayed behind, resulting in a standoff. Authorities suspect Alva was being held against her will.
Alongside Chandler police and deputy U.S. marshals, SWAT teams from Tempe and Mesa also arrived at the scene.
Shortly thereafter, Walsh allegedly began shooting at the task force members from inside the house, who returned fire. Walsh then fled the residence, jumping a fence into a neighboring yard.
Investigators report that Walsh was struck by police gunfire during his escape, then later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Following the shooting, smoke was seen emanating from the house, which soon became fully engulfed in flames. The fire was later extinguished that same day.
Alva’s body was found on Monday after a nearly four-day search, with her cause of death still under investigation.
The East Valley Critical Incident Response Team (EVCIRT) is handling the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
