Fatal B.C. Sea to Sky Highway crash death of Josafat Portillo – Obituary
A devastating collision on B.C.’s Sea to Sky Highway just after midnight on Sunday has been linked to a GoFundMe campaign that aims to assist the sole survivor of the crash.
The victims have been identified as 22-year-old Josafat Portillo, his brother-in-law James Paguia, and his two-year-old daughter Natalia.
Josafat’s wife and Natalia’s mother, Iris Paguia Portillo, was also in the vehicle and is now recovering in stable condition at a hospital.
The GoFundMe page, established Sunday evening, reports that the family was returning home from a church event when the accident occurred.
The crash, which took place around 12:30 a.m. near Daisy Lake Dam, south of Whistler, involved only their vehicle.
Police stated that the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service has completed a thorough investigation, and they do not consider the incident to be criminal in nature.
“This is an absolute tragedy and our hearts and deepest sympathies go out to the families, friends, and loved ones of those involved and who will be impacted by this loss,” said Insp. Robert Dykstra, Officer in Charge of the Sea to Sky RCMP, in a news release on Sunday.
As of Monday evening, the fundraiser for funeral expenses has collected over $30,000.
