A 94-year-old man named William J. Ward lost his life on Thursday in a tragic hit-and-run incident at the University of Kansas Cancer Center in Westwood, Kansas.
Kelsi Carmack, 24, now faces a felony charge for her alleged involvement in this fatal accident.
Court documents reveal that Carmack is charged with failure to stop at an accident resulting in death, a level 5 felony. She is currently employed by the University of Kansas Health.
The collision occurred around 7:50 a.m. in the parking garage at 2650 Shawnee Parkway, as reported by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. Carmack was taken into custody at approximately 1 p.m. on the same day.
The circumstances leading to the crash have not yet been disclosed. According to the sheriff’s office, the victim was identified as William J. Ward from Leawood, Kansas.
In a statement, the University of Kansas Health expressed their sorrow, emphasizing the personal impact of the accident given that one of their employees was involved. Hospital spokesperson Jill Chadwick conveyed the organization’s deep sadness, highlighting the tragic nature of the incident.
Carmack remains in custody with a bond set at $7,500. Her initial court hearing is slated for 1:30 p.m. today.
