Toronto police have confirmed that 61-year-old Karen Montague was the woman killed after allegedly being deliberately hit by a driver in North York earlier this week.
Montague was one of three pedestrians struck by a vehicle outside an apartment building near Victoria Park Avenue and Cassandra Boulevard on Wednesday shortly after 12:30 p.m.
All three victims were rushed to the hospital, where Montague succumbed to her injuries. The other two individuals suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. This incident marks the 61st homicide in Toronto this year.
The driver, 79-year-old Circo Garofano, was apprehended at the scene and has been charged with first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.
Authorities revealed that Garofano and the victims had a “familial relation” but did not specify their exact connection.
While police have described the incident as an “intentional act,” they have not provided any information regarding the motive.
