Isaac James Goswell and Duncan Chisholm die in fatal Mabou, N.S. crash
Fatal Mabou, N.S. crash death of Isaac James Goswell and Duncan Chisholm – Obituary
In western Cape Breton, communities are uniting following a tragic collision that resulted in the deaths of two high school students and a 71-year-old visitor from Utah.
Early on Saturday morning, shortly after 5 a.m., emergency services were dispatched to a crash site on Highway 19 in Mabou, N.S. There, they found a car and a pickup truck had collided.
The driver and passenger of the car were confirmed dead at the scene. The elderly passenger in the truck, a 71-year-old man, succumbed to his injuries shortly after being transported to the hospital.
While the RCMP has yet to officially release the names of the young victims, local residents have identified them as 17-year-old Isaac James Goswell and Duncan Chisholm, whose age remains unspecified.
Goswell was a student at Lockview High School in Fall River, while Chisholm attended Dalbrae Academy in Mabou.
Following the accident, Dalbrae Academy opened its doors to provide support and comfort to those in need.
In response to the news, organizers of the Whycocomagh Summer Festival canceled their Saturday events as a mark of respect for the affected families.
“It’s really hit hard across the county,” said Lynn Chisholm, who represents the Mabou and Port Hood regions on the Inverness County council.
“Everyone is in shock and feeling numb,” Chisholm remarked. Although not related to the deceased students, she had recently visited Goswell’s grandparents in Port Hood.
“We need to be there for them not just in the immediate aftermath, but for the long haul. It’s a profoundly tragic time… and we will keep them in our thoughts and prayers,” Chisholm added.
A GoFundMe campaign initiated by Goswell’s cousin, Chloe Harnish, to support his family has surpassed its $10,000 goal, raising nearly double that amount by Wednesday afternoon.
“Isaac was a radiant presence in our lives, full of promise and potential,” Harnish shared on the crowdfunding platform.
“He had a kind heart and a love for the outdoors that touched everyone who knew him. We want to honor his memory with the respect and love he deserves.”
