The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Tuesday that they will assist the families affected by a tragic two-vehicle accident in Idaho Falls.
According to their statement, all 15 individuals involved were Mexican nationals employed in the U.S. under the H2A visa program.
The Idaho State Police (ISP) reported that 16 people were injured when the driver of a Dodge Ram pickup truck collided head-on with a Chevrolet Express passenger van.
The Mexican government confirmed that all 15 were agricultural workers heading to their jobs in the van. Six of them died at the scene, and nine others were injured, with seven still hospitalized and two discharged.
The Mexico Consulate in Boise has contacted Idaho officials to identify those involved, with their identities confirmed by the ISP. The Bonneville County coroner identified the deceased as Abel Mejía Martínez, 43; Pedro Manuel Alcantar Mejía, 26; Brandon Ponce Gallegos, 24; Jose Guadalupe Sánchez Medina, 20; Luis Enrique Sereno Perez, 32; and Javier Gomez Alcantar, 36.
Mexican officials have reached out to Sigmet Farms Services, the employer of the workers, and legal representatives to provide necessary support and advice. They are coordinating with state officials on the process to repatriate the deceased to Mexico.
“The Government of Mexico emphasizes that protecting its citizens abroad is a priority, especially those in vulnerable situations such as H2A agricultural workers in the United States. We will explore legal and diplomatic measures to ensure their human and labor rights are upheld, investigate this incident thoroughly, and hold accountable those responsible,” stated the Mexican government.
According to ISP, the accident occurred around 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 18. The Dodge Ram driver was traveling eastbound on US-20 near Lindsay Boulevard when they veered off the road and crashed into the van. The driver of the van and five passengers were declared dead at the scene.
