Fatal Des Moines shooting death of Weston Dean Derby of Bellevue – Obituary
Authorities have identified the man killed by officers after a report of a no-contact order violation escalated into a chase and shooting.
Officers responded to a residence in the 5800 block of SE 35th Circle following a report of someone violating a protective order. The suspect, Weston Dean Derby, 45, of Bellevue, was found driving near the location, prompting police to attempt a vehicle stop.
A pursuit ensued, ending in the 4300 block of East Army Post Road. Des Moines police Sgt. Paul Parizek stated that body camera footage shows Derby attempting to flee on foot before turning to face the two pursuing officers and brandishing a handgun.
“He initially points it towards his own head,” Parizek said. “… Then he transitions to pointing it at the officers with both hands. Both officers discharged their weapons. One officer and the suspect were struck.”
Derby was pronounced dead at the scene.
