Dayton police are seeking assistance from the public regarding a fatal shooting that occurred early Sunday morning on Salem Avenue.
The victim, identified as 33-year-old Morrell Fontenot, was confirmed by Montgomery County Coroner Dr. Kent Harshbarger on Tuesday.
Police received a call around 12:30 a.m. about the shooting on the 2800 block of Salem Avenue.
According to Dayton Police Major Brian Johns, Fontenot was walking on the sidewalk near the Arby’s restaurant when he was approached by an unidentified male. The suspect then shot Fontenot multiple times before fleeing on foot.
The assailant was reportedly armed with a handgun. Several vehicles were parked near the scene, and investigators are hopeful that someone may have witnessed the incident or have information that could lead to identifying the suspect.
“We believe that anyone nearby would have heard the gunshots, so we are urging the community to come forward with any information that could help us solve this case,” Johns said.
