Fatal Shawnee County shooting death of Johanys C. Rivera of Topeka and Alvin D. Munsell of Topeka – Obituary
Authorities are working to identify the victims of a recent shooting that claimed the lives of Johanys C. Rivera, 30, and Alvin D. Munsell, 40, in a Topeka neighborhood earlier this week.
On Wednesday, July 31, the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office released further details about the deadly shooting that occurred on Monday, July 29.
The incident took place around 7:45 p.m. in the 1600 block of SW 70th Street, situated in the Montara neighborhood south of Topeka.
Rivera, a woman, was found with multiple gunshot wounds, while Munsell, a man, was discovered with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators have determined that Rivera and Munsell were previously involved in a domestic relationship. Additionally, four young children, all under the age of 12, were present in the home at the time of the shooting.
Three of the children were located at a neighbor’s house, while the fourth was found at a grandparent’s residence.
All the children were unharmed and placed with other family members. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
Initially, the sheriff’s office reported that the situation appeared to be related to domestic issues, and no additional individuals are believed to be involved in the incident.
