Fatal Calgary shooting death of Patrick Kimmel – Obituary
An armed standoff in southeast Calgary, which began Thursday afternoon after shots were fired at officers executing a search warrant, concluded with a fatal incident Friday evening.
The situation intensified around 8:30 p.m. local time on Friday, prompting members of the Calgary tactical unit and the RCMP emergency response team to discharge their firearms. According to police, the confrontation resulted in the death of Patrick Kimmel, identified as the individual involved.
Drumheller RCMP reported that the individual, who had a history of weapon offenses, significantly endangered both the community and law enforcement officers. Chief Mark Neufeld described the standoff as highly volatile and revealed that negotiations with Kimmel had been ongoing for over 30 hours.
On Thursday, the police were engaged in a firearms investigation at a residence in Penbrooke Meadows, located on the 300 block of Penswood Way S.E., when shots were fired at the tactical unit officers around 3:30 p.m. Despite efforts to peacefully resolve the situation, the suspect began shooting from inside the home about ten minutes later.
Police estimated that over 100 rounds were fired during the standoff. Fortunately, no officers or bystanders were injured. Memorial Drive, a major roadway in Calgary, was closed between 52nd Street S.E. and 68th Street S.E. until the situation was resolved.
Residents of the Penbrooke area had been instructed to shelter in place, but authorities have since posted updates allowing return to certain addresses. Those who had been displaced were advised to seek alternative accommodations and contact 403-266-1234 for assistance.
Chief Neufeld confirmed that Alberta RCMP assisted city police throughout the incident. The Calgary Emergency Management Agency established an information center at Village Square Leisure Centre, offering support services including snacks, water, and emotional health resources.
In a statement issued late Friday, police expressed their apologies for the disruption and fear caused by the standoff. They acknowledged the significant impact on residents’ sense of safety and the ongoing disruptions due to road closures and restricted access.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) will now investigate the officer-involved shooting. The Calgary Police Service has stated that no further information will be released as ASIRT takes over the inquiry.
For support, individuals can contact the Calgary police victim assistance team at 403-428-8398 or toll-free at 1-888-327-7828.
