Fatal Fort Wayne shooting death of Gawon Benson – Obituary
Gawon Benson, 31, who was sought by authorities in DeKalb County, was identified as the man fatally shot by police at Purdue University Fort Wayne. The Allen County Coroner confirmed Wednesday that Benson died from multiple gunshot wounds, with the death ruled a homicide-police action.
On Tuesday morning, DeKalb County Community Corrections requested assistance from the Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) in locating Benson, who had escaped their custody, according to FWPD Chief Scott Caudill. Initially, Benson was thought to be carrying a handgun at a local apartment complex.
The NAACP president has labeled the officer-involved shooting at PFW as ‘murder’ and is calling for the release of bodycam footage.
Officers searching the area found Benson near a parking lot on PFW’s campus, close to the intersection of Coliseum and North Anthony Boulevards. Benson reportedly did not comply with police commands and was seen carrying a firearm. Shortly after 7:45 a.m., police reported that Benson had been shot, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The campus was closed for the day during the initial investigation. The shooting is under investigation by FWPD, with additional reviews by Indiana State Police, PFW’s campus police, and the county coroner and prosecutor’s offices.
